Built between 1562 and 1563, the Archiginnasio was once the seat of the ancient university and is today the main library of Bologna. The external part of the Archiginnasio is made up of a long portico of 30 arches and is spread over two internal floors around a central courtyard with a double order of loggias . Two large staircases lead to the rooms on the upper floor: ten classrooms which currently contain the main library deposits, a room for the artists and one for the Legisti (former law students), entitled Stabat Mater Hall.
